A blocked gutter is a small job that turns into an expensive one. Water running down a wall all winter will find its way inside eventually.
What overflowing gutters actually cost you
Water spilling over the front of a gutter runs straight down the wall. On the harled and granite walls common around here, that wall then stays saturated from October through to March and never gets a chance to dry out. The damp works through to the inside face, the plaster blows, and you end up paying a plasterer for what began as a handful of moss in a gutter. It also rots the fascia behind the gutter and the rafter ends sitting on the wallhead.

- Reset falls and add or replace brackets where a run has sagged
- Reseal or replace failed joints and union clips
- Replace cracked or split sections in matching profile
- Full replacement in uPVC or aluminium, with new downpipes to the gully

Cast iron on older properties
Plenty of the older houses in the villages still have their original cast iron. It is worth keeping where it is sound — it lasts far longer than plastic and it suits the building. What kills it is the joints going and the back face rusting where nobody ever painted it. We can repair and rehang cast iron, or replace it with a heritage-profile aluminium that looks right on a stone house and does not need painting. Swapping a stone cottage to standard white uPVC half-round is the cheap option and it always looks it.
Why gutters sag here
Brackets at 1 metre centres are standard. On an exposed site that takes the weight of wet snow sliding off a slate roof, they want to be closer than that, and the fixings want to be into sound timber rather than into a fascia that is already soft. If your gutter has pulled away once it will do it again unless the fascia behind it is dealt with too — which is where roofline replacement comes in.

How often should gutters be cleared?
Once a year for most houses, and twice where there are trees nearby — after the leaves come down in autumn, and again in spring after the gales.
Can you match my existing gutter profile?
Usually. Half-round, square, ogee and deep-flow are all still available, and we can get heritage profiles for older properties.
Do you clear gutters on bungalows only, or two-storey too?
Both. Two-storey work is done off ladders with a stand-off or a tower depending on access and ground conditions.
