Why roofs fail here
Built for weather coming off the North Sea
Roofs here fail in the same few places. Driven rain finds the abutment where a roof meets a gable, the lead apron round a chimney, and the verge on the exposed side. Salt in the air shortens the life of every fixing on the roof.
Then there is nail sickness. The iron nails holding Scotch slate corrode from the inside, and one winter the slates start letting go in twos and threes. Patch that roof and you are back up a ladder next season.
Scottish roofs are sarked — a continuous timber deck under the slate rather than open battens. A strength when the boards are sound, a hidden problem when they are not, because water past a broken slate sits on the timber and rots it quietly.
- We lift and check sarking on every re-roof, not just the visible damage
- Code 4 and Code 5 lead on valleys, soakers and abutments — no mortar fillets
- Stainless or copper fixings where salt air would eat galvanised

Common questions
Questions we get asked most
How quickly can you get out to a leak?
Ring any time — the phone is answered day or night. Water coming into the house is treated as emergency work and goes to the front of the queue. Storm weeks fill up fast across Buchan, so phone early.
Do you charge to come and look?
No. We come out, get up to the roof and tell you what we find. You get a written price before we start, and it only changes if we open something up and find rotten timber — in which case we stop and ring you first.
Does my roof need replacing, or can it be repaired?
A few slates off after a gale is a repair. Slates letting go all over the roof means the nails have corroded through, and patching that just moves the leak along. We will tell you which one you have, even when it is the cheaper answer.
